Because function should determine form, a thorough understanding of the utilization of a building is the most important aspect in public service building design.

Functional Planning
Understanding the function of a building is important in any building design.  And this understanding is particularly crucial to the effective design of governmental facilities.   Terry Shrum works closely with the client’s staff to identify their organization's specific needs.  With his thorough understanding of the client’s operational processes and specialized equipment needs, Terry is able to design facilities which adequately meets the client’s functional demands.

Open Communications
Keeping an open line of communication with the client and their staff, Terry can consider all elements which influence the design of a facility.  Areas of concern in every design include departmental functions, specialized equipment, building elements and systems and building materials to be specified.

Interior Planning
Terry provides special attention to planning the client’s interiors.  By analyzing the requirements of each department, Terry studies how these areas relate the overall building design.  This information allows Terry to further customize the building to meet the client’s specific needs.  Also, in selecting finishes to coordinate with the overall design, Terry realizes the importance of choosing durable and low-maintenance materials.

Affordable Parameters
Terry is sensitive to the importance of cost control, from the design of the building to its ultimate construction and operation.  Having experience in all types of government, health care and educational facility design, he knows how to work within affordable cost parameters.  Terry’s working knowledge of building codes and construction building systems allows him to consistently design cost-effective facilities within assigned budgets.

Thorough Documentation
A thorough set of Construction Documents is important in maintaining realistic budgets and time schedules.  Terry’s concise documentation is a proven way to save time and money on a building project.   With fewer areas left to question, change orders and time delays are minimized during construction.
